Extra-axial chordomas are rare primary tumors outside the spine. This case report details a thoracic wall chordoma in a 56-year-old woman, highlighting its successful surgical removal and excellent prognosis.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Extra-axial chordomas, also known as parachordoma or chordoma periphericum, are exceptionally rare primary tumors originating outside the axial skeleton.
  • Due to their rarity, established data on survival rates, recurrence patterns, and metastatic potential remain largely unknown.

Observation:

  • This report focuses on a 56-year-old female patient presenting with an extra-axial chordoma.
  • The tumor was located in the right thoracic wall, closely associated with the tenth rib.

Findings:

  • The extra-axial chordoma was completely excised surgically.
  • While late recurrences (up to 12 years) and metastases are infrequently documented for these tumors, the prognosis in this specific case following complete resection is excellent.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case contributes valuable clinical information on the presentation and management of rare extra-axial chordomas.
  • Complete surgical resection appears to offer a favorable outcome, though long-term surveillance for potential late recurrence is warranted.
