Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer01:03

Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.

The Retinoblastoma Gene

Tumor suppressor genes are normal genes that can slow down cell division, repair DNA mistakes, or program the cells for apoptosis in case of irreparable damage. Hence, they play an essential role in preventing the proliferation of damaged cells.
The first-ever tumor suppressor gene called Rb was identified in retinoblastoma - a rare eye tumor in children. In inherited forms of the disease, a child inherits one defective copy of the Rb gene, which predisposes them to retinoblastoma. However,...

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever01:26

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a severe tick-borne illness caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a Gram-negative, coccobacillary bacterium. This pathogen is an obligate intracellular parasite, requiring a host cell for replication. Transmission occurs through the bite of an infected tick. In the United States, the most important vectors are Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick) and Dermacentor andersoni (Rocky Mountain wood tick), though other tick species may also serve as vectors.

Summary

Sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma can be misdiagnosed in children due to its appearance. Correct diagnosis requires awareness of its features and immunophenotypical evaluation for better patient outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Pediatric Medicine

Background:

  • Sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare variant initially described in adults.
  • It presents diagnostic challenges in pediatric sarcoma evaluations.

Observation:

  • This variant features a dense hyalinized collagenous matrix.
  • It can exhibit a pseudovascular growth pattern, mimicking other sarcomas.

Findings:

  • The study details pathologic features of sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma in 3 pediatric cases.
  • Immunophenotypical evaluation is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
  • Cytogenetic findings suggest a potential link to embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

Implications:

  • Increased awareness of this variant is essential for correct pediatric sarcoma diagnosis.
  • Further genotyping may clarify its nosology, pathogenesis, and prognosis.
  • Accurate diagnosis impacts patient management and therapeutic strategies.
