Summary

A rare primary brain tumor, cerebral hemangiosarcoma, was found in a young dog. This case highlights the importance of considering uncommon brain cancers in immature animals.

Background:

  • Primary brain tumors are uncommon in dogs.
  • Hemangiosarcomas typically affect the spleen, liver, or heart.
  • Intracranial hemangiosarcomas are exceptionally rare, especially in immature animals.

Observation:

  • A 6-week-old female cross-breed dog presented with a primary cerebral hemangiosarcoma.
  • Gross examination revealed a poorly demarcated, hemorrhagic mass effacing the right cerebral hemisphere.
  • Microscopic analysis showed an infiltrative proliferation of neoplastic endothelial cells forming vascular channels.

Findings:

  • The tumor cells stained positively for factor VIII-related antigen, confirming endothelial origin.
  • The neoplastic cells were negative for glial fibrillary acidic protein, ruling out glial tumors.
  • This is the first documented case of a primary intracranial hemangiosarcoma in an immature dog.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of primary brain tumors in young dogs.
  • It underscores the need for thorough histopathological evaluation of central nervous system masses in pediatric canine patients.
  • Further research may elucidate the specific risk factors and biological behavior of this tumor in immature animals.
