Summary

Missile attacks during the 2003 Gulf War were linked to a rise in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) admissions. The increase was specific to AMI and not observed in other cardiac conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Public Health
  • Environmental Medicine

Background:

  • Kuwait experienced 10 consecutive days of missile attacks during the 2003 Gulf War.
  • Assessing the health impacts of wartime events on cardiovascular health is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the influence of missile attacks on the incidence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective comparison of AMI admissions during the missile attacks period (MAP) in 2003 with four 10-day control periods.
  • Control periods included the 10 days before and after MAP, and the same periods in 2001 and 2002.
  • Statistical analysis using incidence rate ratios (IRR) and confidence intervals (CI).

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • AMI admissions were highest during MAP (21 cases) compared to control periods (14-16 cases).
  • A significant increase in AMI admissions was observed during the first 5 days of MAP (IRR = 2.43, p < 0.01).
  • The rise in AMI admissions was specific to AMI and did not affect other acute cardiac conditions.
  • Conclusions:

    • Missile attacks were associated with an increased incidence of acute myocardial infarction.
    • The observed increase in AMI was specific to the condition and did not impact other acute cardiac events.
