Brain Waves01:23

Brain Waves

Brain waves are electrical signals generated by the neurons in the brain, which are regularly monitored to measure mental activities. Brain waves and their frequency ranges can be measured using an electroencephalogram or EEG. There are four main types of brain waves, each with distinct characteristics:

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Electroencephalography (EEG)

Background:

  • Alpha blocking is characterized by brief periods of lower voltage irregular activity during eyes-closed resting occipital EEG.
  • The precise electrophysiological characteristics of these transient EEG events are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in mean frequency and spectral purity during spontaneous alpha blocking periods.
  • To evaluate the accuracy of the term 'low-voltage fast activity' for these EEG events.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized eyes-closed resting occipital EEG recordings from 32 healthy subjects.
  • Developed new methods for evaluating mean frequency and spectral purity (Spectral Purity Index) over a 0.5-second window with 0.1-second steps.
  • Analyzed conjoint changes in these EEG parameters during irregular activity periods.

Main Results:

  • Spectral purity consistently decreased during periods of lower voltage irregular activity.
  • Mean frequency remained relatively unaltered, with changes not exceeding +/- 2.5 Hz.

Conclusions:

  • The term 'low-voltage fast activity' may be inaccurate for spontaneous irregular EEG activity during alpha blocking.
  • EEG analysis reveals distinct changes in spectral purity without significant alterations in mean frequency during these events.
