This study determined the epileptic seizure onset zone using scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) signal processing. Nonlinear correlation analysis of EEG channels accurately lateralized seizure onset in most cases.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Medical Signal Processing
- Epileptology
Background:
- Accurate localization of the epileptic seizure onset zone is crucial for effective treatment.
- Scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) provides a non-invasive method for monitoring brain activity.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the lateralization of the epileptic seizure onset zone.
- To evaluate the efficacy of scalp EEG signal processing for seizure localization.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive method analyzing the evolution of nonlinear correlation coefficients between bipolar EEG channels (longitudinal montage).
- Nonlinear regression analysis was used to estimate correlation coefficients.
- Methodology involved segmentation, seizure onset determination, and lateralization steps.
Main Results:
- Mean nonlinear correlation values between EEG channels were significantly higher on the side of seizure onset.
- The developed method demonstrated high reproducibility.
Conclusions:
- The side of seizure onset was determined for 80-90% of studied seizures.
- Comparing nonlinear correlation coefficients between brain hemispheres effectively determines seizure onset side.
