Summary
Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expressing inflammatory cells may contribute to inverted papilloma (IP) development. This study investigated MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression in sinonasal tract lesions.

Background:
- Inverted papilloma (IP) is a sinonasal tract lesion known for recurrence and association with cancer.
- The role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), specifically MMP-2 and MMP-9, in IP development is not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the expression and potential role of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in inverted papilloma.
- To compare MMP expression in IP with nasal polyps (NP) and control nasal mucosa (CM).

- Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression in 15 IP specimens.
- IP samples were compared to 12 NP and 6 CM samples.

Conclusions:
- MMP-9 expressing inflammatory cells appear to play a role in the pathophysiology of inverted papilloma.
- Further research into the inflammatory mechanisms underlying IP is warranted.
