Summary

Children in after-school activities (ASA) achieve more daily steps than those not participating. Physical education (PE) contributes fewer steps but at a higher intensity, highlighting the importance of structured activity for youth physical activity (PA) patterns.

  • Repeated measures analyses of variance were used to analyze differences in daily steps.
  • Main Results:

    • The total sample averaged 11,392 steps/day, with boys (12,490 steps/day) accumulating significantly more than girls (10,557 steps/day).
    • Physical education (PE) contributed 2046 steps/day (18% of total), while after-school activities (ASA) contributed 5366 steps/day (47% of total).
    • Despite lower absolute contribution, PE yielded a higher rate of steps/min (45.5) compared to ASA (13.1).

    Conclusions:

    • Youth involved in ASA accumulated significantly more steps daily compared to non-participants.
    • While PE contributes fewer steps, its intensity (steps/min) is higher, indicating its importance in a child's PA regimen.
    • After-school activities play a substantial role in the overall daily physical activity of adolescents.
