Summary

Transurethral microwave hyperthermia for benign prostatic hyperplasia shows safe prostate and rectal temperatures. Heating is confined to the target tissue, with minimal thermal spread beyond 1 cm.

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) causes urinary outlet obstruction.
  • Microwave hyperthermia is explored as a BPH treatment.
  • Intracavitary microwave applicators are used in transrectal and transurethral techniques.

Observation:

  • Transurethral applicators heat tissue within the prostatic urethra.
  • Concerns exist regarding thermal injury to the prostate and rectum.
  • Interstitial temperature measurements were taken in 5 patients.

Findings:

  • Temperature decreased at approximately 6°C/cm radially from the applicator.
  • No significant temperature increase was observed beyond 1 cm from the prostatic capsule.
  • Rectal mucosa temperatures remained unaffected.
