Summary

Awareness Through Movement (ATM) significantly increased hamstring muscle length more than passive stretching. This active movement method offers a new approach to improving flexibility without traditional stretching techniques.

Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Kinesiology
  • Physical Therapy

Background:

  • Passive stretching is a common method for increasing muscle flexibility.
  • However, passive stretching does not appear to create lasting changes in muscle viscoelasticity.
  • An alternative method, Awareness Through Movement (ATM), was investigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of Awareness Through Movement (ATM) for increasing hamstring muscle length.
  • To compare the effects of ATM with a control group that did not undergo the intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-three subjects were randomly assigned to either the ATM group or a control group.
  • The ATM group engaged in active movements designed to lengthen hamstrings.
  • Hamstring length was measured using the Active Knee Extension Test before and after the intervention.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The ATM group demonstrated a significant increase in hamstring muscle length (7.04 degrees).
  • The control group showed a smaller increase in hamstring muscle length (1.15 degrees).

Conclusions:

  • Active movement, as utilized in ATM, can effectively increase muscle length without passive stretching.
  • Further research is warranted to explore these findings and the potential of active movement interventions.
