Summary

Ambulatory urodynamic monitoring (AUM) is well-tolerated by patients with bladder dysfunction. Most patients found the procedure acceptable and would return for future AUM sessions.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate emotional variables, including anxiety, pain, bother, and boredom, in patients undergoing ambulatory urodynamic monitoring (AUM).
  • To determine patient acceptance and willingness to undergo repeat AUM procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 40 patients (33 female, 7 male) with overactive bladder undergoing three AUM sessions.
  • Patients completed visual analog scale questionnaires pre- and post-procedure.
  • Emotional variables were analyzed in relation to demographics and AUM session number.

Main Results:

  • Pre-procedural anxiety levels did not significantly differ by sex, age, education, or income.
  • Older patients (>50 years) reported higher bother levels.
  • Increased income correlated with decreased pain, bother, and boredom.
  • Subjective bother significantly influenced examiner-rated intolerance.
  • Intolerance decreased with subsequent AUM sessions.
  • 85% of patients would return for repeat AUM.

  • Repeated AUM sessions lead to reduced intolerance.
