Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Minimal-access thyroid surgery (MIT) techniques are gaining prominence.
  • Evaluating the feasibility and outcomes of MIT is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the experience with thyroid surgery using a minimally invasive approach (MIT).
  • To assess variables influencing the indications for non-endoscopic MIT.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective nonrandomized study conducted from October 2002 to December 2004.
  • Evaluation of 296 patients undergoing thyroid surgery, with 46 eligible for MIT.
  • MIT utilized a 2.5- to 3-cm incision.

Main Results:

  • One case of transient inferior laryngeal nerve palsy reported.

  • No instances of definitive postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
  • Conversion to conventional thyroidectomy occurred in only two cases.
  • All patients reported excellent cosmetic results.
  • Conclusions:

    • Minimal-access thyroid surgery (MIT) is a safe and viable option for select patients.
    • MIT offers reduced morbidity compared to conventional thyroidectomy.
    • Improved cosmetic results are a significant advantage of MIT.
