Summary

Minimal-access thyroid surgery (MIT) offers a safe and feasible alternative to conventional methods, providing excellent cosmetic outcomes. This minimally invasive technique demonstrates low morbidity in selected patients.

Background:

Minimal-access thyroid surgery (MIT) techniques are gaining prominence.
Evaluating the feasibility and outcomes of MIT is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the experience with thyroid surgery using a minimally invasive approach (MIT).
To assess variables influencing the indications for non-endoscopic MIT.

Main Methods:

Prospective nonrandomized study conducted from October 2002 to December 2004.
Evaluation of 296 patients undergoing thyroid surgery, with 46 eligible for MIT.
MIT utilized a 2.5- to 3-cm incision.

Main Results:

One case of transient inferior laryngeal nerve palsy reported.

No instances of definitive postoperative hypoparathyroidism.

Conversion to conventional thyroidectomy occurred in only two cases.

All patients reported excellent cosmetic results.

Conclusions:

Minimal-access thyroid surgery (MIT) is a safe and viable option for select patients.
MIT offers reduced morbidity compared to conventional thyroidectomy.
Improved cosmetic results are a significant advantage of MIT.
