  • Participants were divided into depressed and non-depressed subgroups for comparative analysis.

    • No significant difference in memory deficit was observed between depressed and non-depressed groups.
    • Memory decline with age was evident only in the depressed subgroup.
    • Interestingly, depression levels decreased with age in the depressed subgroup, independent of memory performance.

    Conclusions:

    • Advanced age alone does not inevitably lead to increased depression or memory loss.
    • Depression impacts memory function through mechanisms distinct from the severity of depressive symptoms.
    • Further research into the neurobiological underpinnings of depression's effect on memory is warranted.
