Summary

Slight/mild bilateral sensorineural hearing loss is uncommon in elementary students. This condition did not significantly impact language, reading, or behavior in otherwise healthy children, though phonologic short-term memory was affected.

Background:

  • Slight/mild bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SMSNHL) is a hearing impairment that can affect children's development.
  • Previous studies have reported varying prevalence rates and impacts of SMSNHL on children's academic and social well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of SMSNHL in elementary school children.
  • To investigate the effects of SMSNHL on language, reading, behavior, and health-related quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey of 6581 elementary school children in Melbourne, Australia.
  • SMSNHL defined as a hearing level of 16 to 40 dB in the better ear.
  • Standardized assessments and parent-reported outcomes were used, with matched comparisons for normally hearing children.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of SMSNHL was 0.88% (55 children).
  • Children with SMSNHL performed similarly in language, reading, and behavior compared to their peers.
  • Poorer phonologic short-term memory was observed in children with SMSNHL.

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of SMSNHL in this cohort was lower than previously reported.
  • SMSNHL did not demonstrate a significant adverse effect on language, reading, behavior, or quality of life in healthy, intelligent children.
  • Phonologic short-term memory may be an area impacted by SMSNHL.
