Summary

Synchronous online nursing education using voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) enhanced student satisfaction and project completion. This pilot project demonstrated the effectiveness of real-time virtual classrooms in online learning environments.

Background:

Online nursing programs face challenges in promoting student engagement and satisfaction.
Synchronous learning tools offer potential solutions to enhance immediacy in virtual classrooms.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the incorporation of synchronous classroom software into an online nursing program.
To assess student and faculty satisfaction with real-time virtual class sessions.
To explore the impact of synchronous sessions on learning and group project completion.

Main Methods:

A pilot project was conducted in an online Community/Public Health Nursing course at a research university.
Two synchronous class sessions were delivered using voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) via Elluminate Live!.
Student and faculty surveys were administered pre- and post-session; instructional technology faculty evaluated pedagogical strategies.

Main Results:

Students in the pilot group reported higher satisfaction with the web-based course incorporating synchronous sessions.
Post-session feedback indicated that dedicated group time facilitated project completion.
A majority of students felt synchronous activities enhanced their understanding of course content.

Conclusions:

Synchronous sessions using VoIP technology can effectively enhance student satisfaction and engagement in online nursing education.
Integrating real-time interaction and collaborative group work within online courses improves the learning experience.
Recommendations for implementation and pedagogical approaches for synchronous online learning are provided.
