Area of Science:

  • Trauma Surgery
  • Abdominal Wall Injuries
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Traumatic abdominal wall hernias are uncommon injuries.
  • Handlebar hernias result from direct blunt force trauma to the abdomen.

Observation:

  • A 36-year-old male sustained a handlebar hernia after a bicycle accident.
  • The injury involved a small bowel loop protruding into the abdominal wall's subcutaneous fat.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography (CT) accurately identified the small bowel loop within the abdominal wall.
  • CT is a valuable tool for diagnosing handlebar hernias and other traumatic abdominal wall injuries.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the diagnostic utility of CT in rare traumatic hernia presentations.
