This study introduces a novel surface roughness measurement technique using laser speckle pattern texture analysis. The method establishes a monotonic relationship between surface roughness and texture features, enabling accurate in-process measurements.
Area of Science:
- Optics and Photonics
- Materials Science
- Metrology
Background:
- Surface roughness is critical for material performance and function.
- Traditional surface roughness measurement methods can be time-consuming or limited in application.
- Laser speckle patterns contain rich information about surface properties.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a non-contact, texture analysis-based technique for surface roughness measurement.
- To investigate the relationship between speckle pattern texture features and surface roughness.
- To enable in-process surface roughness evaluation.
Main Methods:
- Acquiring surface speckle pattern images using a simple laser and CCD camera setup.
- Analyzing speckle pattern texture using gray-level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM).
- Calibrating the measurement system with a standard surface roughness specimen.
Main Results:
- A strong monotonic relationship was found between surface roughness and the energy feature of GLCM.
- The calibrated system accurately evaluated surface roughness from single speckle images.
- The robustness of speckle pattern texture characterization for surface roughness was demonstrated.
Conclusions:
- The proposed technique offers a viable method for non-contact surface roughness measurement.
- The technique is suitable for in-process monitoring due to its speed and simplicity.
- Speckle pattern texture analysis provides a robust approach to characterizing surface topography.
