Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition

Context:

  • More Exercise for Seniors (MBvO) is a long-standing Dutch program aimed at enhancing elderly social participation and preventing care needs.
  • Despite widespread participation, MBvO's impact on fitness and health in older adults remained unproven for over 25 years.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the MBvO program on the physical fitness, health, and quality of life of independently living older adults aged 65+.
  • To determine if increased frequency of MBvO gymnastics impacts health outcomes.

Summary:

  • A 10-week study involving 386 older adults (65+) randomly assigned to MBvO gymnastics (once or twice weekly) or a health education control group.
  • Once-weekly MBvO showed minor fitness improvements but no effects on subjective health, performance, or quality of life.
  • Twice-weekly MBvO yielded some quality of life benefits for the least active participants at baseline.

Impact:

  • Findings suggest that current MBvO program frequency may be insufficient to yield significant health and fitness benefits for the general elderly population.
  • Recommendations include increasing gymnastics frequency and intensity, incorporating health education, and targeting more inactive older individuals (70+).
