We created a virtual surgical training system, the Toolkit for Illustration of Procedures in Surgery (3D TIPS). This low-cost, user-friendly platform enables immediate surgical training and procedure customization for educators and learners.
Area of Science:
- Medical Simulation
- Surgical Education Technology
Background:
- Traditional surgical training methods face limitations in accessibility and customization.
- The need for adaptable and cost-effective surgical simulation tools is growing.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a computer-based simulation process for creating customized surgical operative environments.
- To introduce the Toolkit for Illustration of Procedures in Surgery (3D TIPS) as an accessible training solution.
Main Methods:
- Development of a user-friendly, low-cost computer-based simulation system.
- Integration of features for immediate learner engagement and educator customization.
- Utilizing video clips and operative images for procedural annotation.
Main Results:
- Successful creation of a virtual operative environment with minimal programmer training.
- Demonstration of immediate training engagement for learners.
- Capability for educators to modify and annotate procedures effectively.
Conclusions:
- The Toolkit for Illustration of Procedures in Surgery (3D TIPS) offers a viable and adaptable solution for surgical training.
- The system facilitates immediate use and customization, enhancing the surgical learning experience.
- A laparoscopic adrenalectomy served as a successful proof of concept for the developed simulation technology.
