Summary

Atopy has minimal impact on chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) severity. While atopic patients reported more sneezing and concentration issues, overall clinical and radiological severity, and revision surgery rates were similar between atopic and non-atopic individuals.

Background:

  • Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common condition affecting the nasal passages.
  • The role of atopy, an allergic hypersensitivity, in CRS severity and outcomes is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of atopy on clinical and radiological severity in CRS patients.
  • To assess whether atopy affects the need for surgical revision in CRS.

Main Methods:

  • 193 CRS patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery were evaluated.
  • Atopic status was determined using ImmunoCAP testing.
  • Clinical severity was measured by Lund symptom and SNOT-20 scores; radiological severity by Lund-Mackay CT scores.

Main Results:

  • 30% of patients had atopy. Atopic status did not correlate with Lund symptom scores.
  • Atopic patients reported increased sneezing, reduced productivity, and concentration (SNOT-20).
  • Mean CT scores were higher in atopic patients, but not significantly within subgroups. Revision surgery rates were similar.

Conclusions:

  • Atopy appears to have a minimal impact on the overall severity of chronic rhinosinusitis.
  • While some quality-of-life aspects are affected, atopy does not significantly worsen radiological findings or increase revision surgery rates in CRS.
