Summary
Plasma neuron-specific enolase (NSE) levels may indicate multiple sclerosis (MS) progression. Lower NSE levels were associated with increased disability and a progressive disease course in MS patients over five years.

Background:
- Plasma S100beta and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) are glial and neuronal markers, respectively, elevated in central nervous system damage.
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease characterized by central nervous system damage.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between plasma S100beta and NSE levels and disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS).
- To assess if these biomarkers correlate with disability and disease course in different MS subtypes.
Main Methods:
- Plasma S100beta and NSE levels were measured in 64 patients across relapsing remitting MS (RRMS), secondary progressive MS (SPMS), and primary progressive MS (PPMS) cohorts.
- Patients were evaluated over a five-year follow-up period for disease progression and disability using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and Multiple Sclerosis Severity Status (MSSS).
Main Results:
- Plasma NSE levels were significantly lower in patients experiencing clinically relevant worsening of EDSS scores and those with a progressive disease course.
- A significant negative correlation was observed between plasma NSE levels and both EDSS and MSSS scores at baseline and after five years.
