Main Methods:
- Sixty patients with moderate or severe COPD were randomized to either interval training (80% W peak) or continuous training (65% W peak) for 16 weeks, twice weekly.
- Assessments included spirometry, cycle ergometry, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and the 12-minute walk test.
- Dyspnoea, mental health (anxiety and depression), and HRQoL were evaluated using validated questionnaires (CRDQ, HAD, SF-36).
Main Results:
- Both IT and CT significantly improved peak exercise capacity (W peak) and peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak), with no significant differences between groups.
- Functional capacity, dyspnoea, mental health, and HRQoL showed significant improvements in both training groups, without inter-group differences.
- At identical work rates (isotime), interval training demonstrated a more favorable physiological response, with significantly lower oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide output (VCO2), and minute ventilation (VE) compared to continuous training.
Conclusions:
- Interval training and continuous training are equally effective in enhancing exercise capacity, functional status, dyspnoea, mental well-being, and HRQoL in COPD patients.
- Interval training may offer advantages in terms of physiological efficiency during exercise at equivalent workloads compared to continuous training.
