Summary

Laminated mouthguards (MGs) show better dimensional stability than single-layer MGs. This is due to lower stress accumulation during fabrication, making them more durable for athletes.

Background:

  • Limited data exists on how fabrication methods affect MG long-term stability.
  • Understanding dimensional stability is crucial for effective athletic protection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the longitudinal dimensional stability of single-layer and laminated mouthguards.
  • To investigate the influence of fabrication methods on mouthguard deformation.
  • To analyze stress accumulation during the mouthguard manufacturing process.

Main Methods:

  • Single-layer (4.0 mm EVA) and laminated (2x2.0 mm EVA) mouthguards were fabricated.
  • Mouthguards were immersed in 37°C water for 60 hours (simulating 3 months of use).
  • Deformation was measured using a profile projector; stress accumulation was analyzed via Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling.

Main Results:

  • Laminated mouthguards exhibited significantly less longitudinal deformation in the anterior region compared to single-layer mouthguards (P < 0.05).
  • FEM analysis indicated maximum stress accumulation in the anterior incisal area, correlating with observed deformations.
  • The anterior area showed the most significant deformation in both types of mouthguards.

Conclusions:

  • Laminated double-layer mouthguards offer superior longitudinal stability over single-layer designs.
  • Reduced stress accumulation during fabrication contributes to the enhanced stability of laminated mouthguards.
  • These findings suggest laminated mouthguards may provide more reliable long-term protection for athletes.
