Summary

Alpha-ethyltryptamine may cause serotonin neurotoxicity. This study found that repeated doses of alpha-ethyltryptamine acetate in rats led to significant decreases in serotonin and related compounds in the brain.

Background:

  • Alpha-ethyltryptamine (Monase) functions as both a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and a monoamine releasing agent.
  • Monoamine releasing agents like MDMA and PCA are known to cause serotonergic deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if alpha-ethyltryptamine induces similar serotonergic deficits as observed with MDMA and PCA.
  • To evaluate the potential neurotoxic effects of alpha-ethyltryptamine on the serotonergic system.

Main Methods:

  • Rats were administered multiple subcutaneous doses of alpha-ethyltryptamine acetate (8 x 30 mg/kg).
  • Serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) levels were measured in frontal cortex and hippocampal samples.
  • 5-HT uptake sites were quantified using [3H]paroxetine binding assays.
