Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of PVS in elderly patients admitted to a long-term geriatric facility.
  • To identify factors influencing PVS development in this population.
  • To evaluate the prognosis for elderly individuals diagnosed with PVS.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort study was conducted in a Skilled Geriatric Nursing Department.
  • Eighty-eight patients admitted over 17 months were assessed for PVS using the Disability Rating Scale (DRS).
  • Diagnosis criteria included clinical assessment and DRS scores.

Main Results:

  • 15% of patients received a clinical PVS diagnosis on admission; the DRS identified 30.5% with PVS.
  • Of 31 PVS patients, 12 died during the study period.
  • Median survival for PVS patients was 127 days (range: 1-517 days).

  • Low PVS recognition on admission indicates a need for increased healthcare provider awareness.
