Summary

Intracavernosal injections are an effective erectile dysfunction treatment. This study offers an algorithm to help healthcare providers determine the best initial dosage and titration for these injection medications.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Andrology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects many men, with oral medications being a common first-line treatment.
  • Intracavernosal injections offer an alternative for men unresponsive or intolerant to oral ED therapies.
  • Establishing the correct initial dosage for intracavernosal injections can be challenging for clinicians.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an evidence-based algorithm to guide healthcare providers in selecting the optimal initial dosage and titration strategy for intracavernosal injection therapy for erectile dysfunction.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify existing data on intracavernosal injection dosages and efficacy.
  • Clinical experience spanning 13 years with patients undergoing intracavernosal injection therapy was compiled.

  • An algorithm was designed integrating literature findings and clinical expertise to standardize dosage determination.
  • Main Results:

    • The developed algorithm provides a structured approach to initiating and adjusting intracavernosal injection dosages.
    • It aims to minimize trial-and-error in dosage titration, potentially improving patient outcomes and treatment satisfaction.
    • The algorithm addresses the challenge of personalized dosing for intracavernosal therapies.

    Conclusions:

    • Intracavernosal injections are a valuable treatment modality for erectile dysfunction.
    • The proposed algorithm offers a practical tool for healthcare providers to optimize the initiation and titration of intracavernosal injection therapy.
    • This approach can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of treating erectile dysfunction with injectable medications.
