Cancer Prevention02:59

Cancer Prevention

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides01:15

Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides

Every plant cell has a cell wall that protects the cell, provides structural support, and gives the cell shape. Cellulose, the main structural component of the plant cell wall, makes up over 30% of plant matter. It is the most abundant organic compound on earth.  Cellulose is an unbranched polysaccharide composed of linear chains of glucose molecules linked by β (1→4) glycosidic bonds.
As a cell matures, its cell wall specializes according to its type. For example, the parenchyma cells of...

    Summary

Researchers isolated four neoflavonoids from Polygonum perfoliatum, including one novel compound. This discovery expands the known chemical diversity of neoflavonoids found in this plant species.

    Area of Science:

    • Natural Product Chemistry
    • Phytochemistry

    Background:

    • The study investigated the chemical constituents of the whole plant Polygonum perfoliatum.
    • Focus was placed on the isolation and identification of neoflavonoid compounds.

    Discussion:

    • Four neoflavonoids were successfully isolated and characterized from Polygonum perfoliatum.
    • Three of the isolated neoflavonoids (1, 2, and 4) are previously documented compounds.
    • Neoflavonoid 3, 3,4-dihydro-5-hydroxy-4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-7-methoxycoumarin, represents a new chemical entity within this class.

    Key Insights:

    • Identification of a novel neoflavonoid, compound 3, from Polygonum perfoliatum.
    • Confirmation of known neoflavonoids (1, 2, and 4) in the plant extract.
    • Contribution to the understanding of the phytochemical profile of Polygonum perfoliatum.
