The periodontal ligament in teeth and the periosteum in bone show the similarity in tissues that consist of the strong collageous connective tissues to moderate or transmit the mechanical stress. Another similarity is the high mechanosensitive response, by which the periodontal ligament and the periosteum are remodeled to tolerate the stress. Here we report about periostin, which is an extracellular matrix protein specifically expressed in the periodontal ligament and the periosteum of tooth and bone tissues. We suggest that periostin contributes to a fusion of osteobioscience and biodentistry.
