Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Adjustable sutures are standard in adult strabismus surgery.
  • A second procedure is typically required for conjunctival closure, regardless of suture adjustment needs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a novel technique for conjunctival closure in strabismus surgery.
  • To eliminate the need for a second surgical procedure for conjunctival closure when suture adjustment is unnecessary.

Main Methods:

  • A 6/0 absorbable polyglactin 910 releasable suture is used for conjunctival closure.
  • The suture is tied in a bow, tucked under the conjunctiva, and can be easily untied if muscle suture adjustment is required.

Main Results:

  • Prospective study of 30 patients demonstrated the technique's effectiveness and patient-friendliness.

  • Follow-up of at least 3 months showed no significant complications.
  • Conclusions:

    • The technique is acceptable, accessible, and time-saving for surgeons and patients.
    • It is particularly beneficial for anxious patients, adolescents, and cases with a low probability of requiring suture adjustment.
