Summary

Porous polyethylene sheets effectively repaired orbital floor fractures, resolving diplopia in all patients and showing minimal complications. This alloplastic material offers a safe and successful option for orbital reconstruction.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Orbital wall reconstruction utilizes various alloplastic materials.
  • Porous polyethylene sheets are increasingly employed for orbital floor fracture repair.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of orbital floor fracture reconstruction using porous polyethylene sheet implants.
  • To assess the efficacy and complication rates of this specific alloplastic material.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 21 patients with orbital floor fractures underwent reconstruction with 0.85-mm porous polyethylene sheets via a transconjunctival approach.
  • Postoperative follow-up averaged 29.7 months, monitoring for diplopia, enophthalmos, infection, and implant complications.

Main Results:

  • Preoperative diplopia resolved in all patients within one month or improved significantly by 6-month follow-up.
  • Enophthalmos improved or resolved in all affected patients.
  • No cases of infection, implant extrusion, migration, worsening diplopia, infraorbital anesthesia, or vision loss were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Porous polyethylene implants demonstrate favorable outcomes in orbital wall fracture repair.
  • The use of porous polyethylene sheets for orbital floor reconstruction is associated with a low complication rate.
