Summary

Representational neglect in patients with hemispatial neglect may stem from an impaired ability to generate mental images, not just explore them. Blindfolding did not improve recall in neglect patients, suggesting a generation deficit.

Background:

  • Hemispatial neglect often involves representational neglect, affecting recall from the left side of mental images.

  • External visual stimuli can exacerbate neglect by drawing attention to the right side.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To differentiate between impaired mental image generation and exploration in representational neglect.
  • To investigate the effect of blindfolding on mental image recall in patients with neglect.

Main Methods:

  • Eight normal participants and eight patients with left representational neglect imagined the map of France.
  • Participants named towns from the mental map within 2 minutes, with eyes open or blindfolded.
  • Performance was compared between conditions and groups.

Main Results:

  • Normal participants recalled more towns when blindfolded, indicating visual distraction.
  • Patients with representational neglect showed no significant difference in recall when blindfolded.
  • Blindfolding did not improve recall of left-sided details in neglect patients.
