Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Immunohistochemistry

Background:

  • Interdigitating cell sarcoma (ICS) is a rare malignant neoplasm of dendritic cells.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate patient management and treatment strategies.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old male presented with right supraclavicular lymphadenopathy.
  • Imaging revealed a large, multinodular lesion within the lymph node.
  • A biopsy was performed for diagnostic evaluation.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination suggested interdigitating cell sarcoma.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis revealed tumor cells with specific markers: adenosine triphosphatase activity, S100 protein, CD1a, CD4, and HLA-DR.
  • Ultrastructural analysis showed characteristic interdigitating cytoplasmic extensions, excluding Birbeck granules.

Related Experiment Videos

  • DNA content analysis confirmed the malignant nature of the tumor cells.
  • Implications:

    • The findings support the origin of the tumor from lymph node interdigitating cells.
    • This case highlights the importance of comprehensive diagnostic techniques for rare tumors.
    • Further research into interdigitating cell sarcoma is warranted to improve understanding and treatment.
