Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between urinary catecholamines, reflecting sympathetic activity, and bone mass in the general population.
  • To clarify the role of specific catecholamines in modulating bone density.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 274 individuals (124 males, 150 females) was studied.
  • Fractionated catecholamines (dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline) were measured in urine.
  • Calcaneal bone density was assessed using a Pixi-Lunar densitometer.

Main Results:

  • Dopamine showed a statistically significant positive correlation with bone mass (r = 0.229, p = 0.0001).
  • This association was consistent in both men (r = 0.184, p = 0.04) and women (r = 0.251, p = 0.002).
  • Multiple correlation analysis confirmed dopamine as a significant predictor of bone mass (p = 0.038).

Conclusions:

  • Dopamine is an independent, positive determinant of bone mass in both sexes within the general population.
  • In women, this relationship is independent of their hormonal status.
  • These findings suggest a direct role for dopamine in maintaining bone health.
