Occipital mega encephalocele. Case report

Encephalocele is a central nervous system malformation characterized by the herniation of the intracranial structures through a bony defect of the skull table. This is a case of a newborn female with a mega occipital encephalocele due to herniation of a part of the ventricular system. Urgent resection of the encephalocele and reconstruction of the meningeal and bone sheaths were performed. Nonetheless encephalocele has a poor prognosis and the surgical resection of particularly voluminous herniated masses can usually provoke severe deficits. The little patient, at discharge, one month after surgery, fed spontaneously and her motility was conserved.
