Summary

Transvesical prostatectomy, an older surgical method, shows good long-term results for benign prostate enlargement but has high bleeding and re-intervention rates. Careful follow-up is needed for patients experiencing urinary incontinence post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Procedures
  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Context:

  • Transvesical (open) prostatectomy is a less frequently performed surgical technique.
  • Limited recent documentation and training pose challenges for urologists.
  • This study retrospectively analyzes outcomes of this procedure.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the outcomes and complications of transvesical prostatectomy.
  • To assess patient satisfaction and long-term effects of the procedure.

Summary:

  • The study reviewed 66 patients undergoing open prostatectomy between 1994 and 2003.
  • Mean operation time was 88 minutes with significant blood loss (917 mL), requiring transfusions in 50% of cases.
  • Post-operative catheterization averaged 7.2 days, with 8.4 days of hospitalization. 9% required re-intervention within 30 days.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 88% of patients reported satisfaction with urination, though 5 patients experienced urinary incontinence.
  • Impact:

    • Open prostatectomy is associated with considerable perioperative bleeding and re-intervention rates, despite low mortality.
    • Good long-term functional outcomes are observed, but urinary incontinence affects more patients than anticipated.
    • Enhanced patient monitoring is recommended for those undergoing this procedure.
