Summary

Demanding cognitive tasks interfere with early emotion processing, as shown by reduced Early Posterior Negativity (EPN) amplitudes. This suggests emotion discrimination is not automatic when attentional resources are taxed.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Emotional stimuli capture visual attention, reflected by the Early Posterior Negativity (EPN) around 150-300 ms.
  • Previous research indicates EPN increases for pleasant/unpleasant images versus neutral ones.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if early emotion discrimination is automatic or susceptible to interference from concurrent processing demands.
  • To assess emotional processing during a feature-based attention task with varying cognitive loads.

Main Methods:

  • Participants performed a visual attention task concurrently with emotional picture viewing.
  • Event-related potentials (ERPs), including EPN, Selection Negativity, and P3b, were recorded.
  • Task difficulty was manipulated to vary processing demands.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Behavioral and ERP data confirmed successful performance on the primary attention task.
  • EPN modulation by emotion was observed under low processing demands, replicating prior findings.
  • Under high processing demands, EPN amplitudes did not differ between emotional and neutral images, indicating interference.

Conclusions:

  • Competing attentional demands significantly reduce the early discrimination of emotional content.
  • These findings support an interference model of emotion-attention interaction, even in feature-based attention.
  • Early emotion discrimination is not entirely effortless and depends on available cognitive resources.
