Sildenafil citrate (Viagra) solution was tested in vitro on human sperm motility. Higher concentrations of sildenafil showed a significant, concentration-dependent increase in sperm motility in asthenozoospermic samples.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Biology
- Pharmacology
- Andrology
Background:
- Asthenozoospermia, characterized by reduced sperm motility, is a significant factor in male infertility.
- Sildenafil citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, is primarily known for treating erectile dysfunction.
- Its potential effects on sperm function remain an area of research interest.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the in vitro effects of varying concentrations of sildenafil citrate on human sperm motility.
- To determine if sildenafil citrate exhibits a dose-dependent effect on sperm motility in asthenozoospermic individuals.
Main Methods:
- Eighty-five asthenozoospermic semen specimens were analyzed.
- Semen samples were exposed in vitro to five different concentrations of sildenafil citrate (0.1–4.0 mg/mL) and a control.
- Sperm motility was assessed at multiple time points (0.5, 1, 2, and 3 hours) post-incubation.
Main Results:
- Sildenafil citrate demonstrated a concentration-dependent stimulatory effect on ejaculated sperm motility.
- The observed enhancement in motility was directly related to the concentration of sildenafil citrate used.
- No significant effects were noted in the control group.
Conclusions:
- In vitro application of sildenafil citrate can enhance human sperm motility in a concentration-dependent manner.
- These findings suggest a potential, albeit indirect, role for sildenafil citrate in improving sperm function in specific contexts.
- Further research is warranted to explore the clinical implications and underlying mechanisms of sildenafil's effect on sperm motility.
