Background:

  • Somatization disorder (SD) is a significant somatoform disorder, characterized by high disability and healthcare costs.
  • Understanding the underlying cognitive processes in SD is crucial for effective management and treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate cognitive processing in Somatization Disorder patients using auditory-stimulus P300 evoked potentials.
  • To assess discriminative, attentional, and cognitive functions in SD patients compared to healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study design was employed.
  • Twenty-five patients diagnosed with Somatization Disorder (DSM-IV-TR criteria) and 25 healthy controls were recruited.
  • P300 evoked potentials were measured using auditory stimuli, with groups matched for age and gender.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant increase in mean P300 latency was observed in Somatization Disorder patients compared to the control group (p<0.01).
  • No significant differences were found in N100 latency, P200 latency, or P300 amplitude (Pz) between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Somatization Disorder patients demonstrate electrophysiological disturbances in cognitive information processing.
  • These findings suggest alterations in the neural mechanisms underlying attention and cognitive evaluation in individuals with SD.
