Sclerochoroidal calcification, a condition affecting the eye

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Sclerochoroidal calcification is a rare ocular condition.
  • Its prevalence and typical presentations are not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical and echographic features of sclerochoroidal calcification.
  • To determine the frequency of calcium metabolism abnormalities in affected patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 19 patients with sclerochoroidal calcification.
  • Ophthalmoscopic examination and ocular echography.
  • Assessment of calcium metabolism in a subset of patients.

Main Results:

  • Bilateral findings in 16 patients, unilateral in 3.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lesions presented as plaque-like or tumor-like.
  • Echography confirmed calcification in all cases, often involving both choroid and sclera.
  • Calcium metabolism was normal in most patients investigated.
  • Conclusions:

    • Idiopathic sclerochoroidal calcification exhibits characteristic echographic and ophthalmoscopic findings.
    • The condition may be more prevalent than previously thought.
