Transcervical Enucleation of a Giant Cervicothoracic Intramural Esophageal Spindle Cell Tumor

Abstract:
Mammary-type myofibroblastoma and spindle cell lipoma are rare benign spindle cell tumors commonly present in soft tissue sites. We report a novel case of a giant intramural retinoblastoma susceptibility gene (RB1)-deleted spindle cell neoplasm of the esophagus in a 61-year-old man with dysphagia. The 9-cm cervicothoracic tumor extended from the upper esophageal sphincter to the level of the aortic arch. The tumor was enucleated from the esophageal wall through a transcervical incision. This type of giant cervicothoracic tumor provided an anatomic and surgical challenge and was able to be successfully resected through the neck.
