Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the association between parapapillary chorioretinal atrophy and glaucoma.
  • To compare PPCA in normal, glaucomatous, and ocular hypertensive eyes.

  • Quantitative analysis of parapapillary chorioretinal atrophy in 691 normal eyes, 1081 glaucomatous eyes, and 31 ocular hypertensive eyes.
  • Statistical comparison of PPCA size and prevalence across different ocular conditions.

  • PPCA was significantly larger and more frequent in glaucomatous eyes (1.07 mm²) compared to normal (0.55 mm²) and ocular hypertensive eyes (0.55 mm²).
  • PPCA was also larger in eyes with moderate glaucomatous damage (0.86 mm²).
  • PPCA correlated with shallow cupping, diffuse nerve fiber loss, tessellated fundus, decreasing neuroretinal rim area, and was larger in the affected eye in unilateral glaucoma.

Conclusions:

  • Parapapillary chorioretinal atrophy is significantly associated with glaucoma.
  • PPCA may serve as a relevant indicator in the assessment of glaucomatous optic nerve damage.
