Background:

  • Auditory neuropathy/auditory synaptopathy (AN/AS) is a complex hearing disorder affecting the auditory pathway.
  • Understanding the diverse risk factors associated with AN/AS is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and describe the various risk factors and etiological coincidences in children diagnosed with AN/AS.
  • To differentiate between genetic and non-genetic causes of AN/AS in pediatric populations.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective chart review was conducted for 37 children diagnosed with AN/AS between 1997 and 2005.
  • Risk factors and etiological factors were critically analyzed for each case.

Main Results:

  • Perinatal factors, including prematurity and low birth weight, were identified in 18 neonates.
  • Hyperbilirubinemia was a significant finding in 13 children.
  • Other identified factors included prenatal infections, syndromal diseases, and a familial pattern in 2 siblings; 7 cases were idiopathic.
