Secondary amines react with nitrous acid to form N-nitrosamines, as depicted in Figure 1. Nitrous acid, a weak and unstable acid, is formed in situ from an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite and strong acids, such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, in cold conditions. In the presence of an acid, the nitrous acid gets protonated. The subsequent loss of water results in the formation of the electrophile known as nitrosonium ion.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the temporal stability of nitrate concentrations in private well water.
  • To determine if a single nitrate measurement can represent long-term exposure in drilled wells.

  • Collected water samples from 853 private wells in May 1994 and September 1995.
  • Measured nitrate-nitrogen (nitrate-N) using the colorimetric cadmium reduction method.
  • Analyzed temporal stability using mixed-effects analysis of variance.

  • No significant difference was found in nitrate-N levels between the two sampling times (16 months apart).
  • Well-to-well variation accounted for most of the nitrate concentration variance (89%), with residual error at 12%.
