Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the performance of a disposable Intersurgical Scented mask against a traditional reusable black rubber mask.
  • To evaluate the impact of mask design on the quality of the mask-face seal using expired oxygen concentration.

Main Methods:

  • A randomised crossover trial involving 30 subjects was conducted.
  • Subjects breathed 100% oxygen via each mask type for three minutes, with mask order randomised.
  • Expired oxygen concentration was measured at 15-second intervals to generate oxygen wash-in curves.

Main Results:

  • The Intersurgical Scented mask demonstrated superior performance in achieving an airtight seal.
  • Mean end-tidal oxygen concentrations at three minutes were 86.9% for the Intersurgical mask versus 81% for the black rubber mask (P=0.008).

Conclusions:

  • The soft cuff design of the Intersurgical Scented mask provides a significantly better seal than the traditional black rubber facemask.
  • This suggests improved mask-face seal quality translates to enhanced oxygenation efficacy.
