Wnt pathway-related gene expression during malignant progression in ulcerative colitis

The Wnt signaling pathway is activated early in ulcerative colitis (UC) related cancer development. This involves beta-catenin accumulation and changes in E-cadherin and cyclin D1, contributing to malignant progression.

- Intracellular beta-catenin accumulation, indicating Wnt pathway activation, was observed in dysplastic lesions.
- Upregulation of oncogene cyclin D1 and downregulation of tumor suppressor E-cadherin were noted in (pre)neoplastic states.
- Moderate c-myc immunolabeling was present in malignant and premalignant lesions.
Conclusions:
- The Wnt/beta-catenin pathway is activated in the early stages of malignant progression in ulcerative colitis.
- Changes in E-cadherin and cyclin D1 expression support the role of Wnt signaling in UC-related cancer development.
- These molecular alterations may explain the high malignant potential of dysplasia in UC.
