Summary

Cognitive function significantly influences the intensity of physical therapy (PT) for elderly hip fracture (HF) patients. Tailoring rehabilitation based on cognitive status, assessed by the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), is recommended for better outcomes.

  • The number of rehabilitative procedures (NRP) was calculated as a ratio of procedures to hospital stay duration.
  • Main Results:

    • Patients received an average of 3.8 ± 1.3 NRP, with considerable variation.
    • Poorer cognitive function and pre-fracture functional status were associated with fewer NRP.
    • The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score was the sole significant predictor of NRP in regression analysis.

    Conclusions:

    • Cognitive performance is a key determinant of physical therapy intensity in elderly hip fracture patients.
    • Rehabilitation strategies should be individualized based on a patient's baseline cognitive status.
