A large retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma was surgically removed from a 61-year-old woman. Despite successful resection, local recurrence led to a fatal outcome, highlighting the aggressive nature of this rare tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcoma.
  • Early diagnosis and complete surgical resection are crucial for patient outcomes.

Observation:

  • A 61-year-old woman presented with back pain due to a large left retroperitoneal tumor.
  • Computed tomography revealed a massive retroperitoneal mass.
  • Surgical intervention involved left nephrectomy and left hemi-colectomy.

Findings:

  • Histological examination confirmed a large leiomyosarcoma (26 x 20 x 16 cm, 3.84 kg).
  • The patient experienced local recurrence two months post-surgery, leading to intestinal obstruction (ileus).
  • A review of 54 Japanese literature cases of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma is presented.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case underscores the challenges in managing large retroperitoneal leiomyosarcomas.
  • Aggressive local recurrence can occur even after apparent complete resection.
  • Further research into effective adjuvant therapies is warranted for improving survival rates.
