Assessment of the Cardiovascular System I: Subjective Data01:23

Assessment of the Cardiovascular System I: Subjective Data

A thorough health history and physical assessment are essential for identifying cardiovascular disease (CVD) symptoms and distinguishing them from other health issues.
Initial Enquiry
Ask the patient about their primary concern and thoroughly explore all reported symptoms.
Medical History
Investigate past illnesses affecting the cardiovascular system, such as angina, anemia, rheumatic fever, congenital heart disease, stroke, thrombophlebitis, dysrhythmias, varicosities
Inquire about symptoms...
Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra. Symptoms...

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...
Primary Motives: Sleep, Sex, and Pain Avoidance01:24

Primary Motives: Sleep, Sex, and Pain Avoidance

Primary motives such as sleep, sex, and pain avoidance are crucial drivers of behavior in humans and animals. These motives ensure survival, reproductive success, and overall well-being by prompting actions that meet essential bodily needs.
Sleep is a fundamental physiological drive that fosters a state of restfulness crucial for several bodily functions. It facilitates body restoration, the process by which the body repairs, rejuvenates, and maintains itself during sleep, including memory...
Factors Affecting Perception01:25

Factors Affecting Perception

Perception is influenced by perceptual set, context, motivation, and emotion. Perceptual set, or perceptual expectancy, refers to the tendency to perceive things in a particular way, influenced by previous experiences and expectations. This phenomenon affects the interpretation of stimuli, creating a set of mental tendencies and assumptions that impact sensory perceptions of sound, taste, touch, and sight.
An illustrative example of a perceptual set is the scenario where an airline pilot told...
Sex Linked Disorders01:43

Sex Linked Disorders

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.

Summary

Subjective tinnitus can impact sexual function, particularly in the early stages. Psychological distress from tinnitus may affect sexual performance, but individuals often adapt over time.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Psychology
  • Sexual Health

Background:

  • Tinnitus, a common auditory perception, is associated with psychological distress.
  • Psychological issues stemming from tinnitus can negatively influence quality of life, including sexual function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between psychological problems in patients with subjective tinnitus and sexual disturbance.
  • To investigate how tinnitus loudness and duration correlate with sexual function in affected individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 20 patients with subjective tinnitus and 20 healthy controls, all non-psychiatric and sexually active.
  • Assessment of tinnitus loudness (STLL-Sc), anxiety, and depression (Zung SDS).
  • Evaluation of male sexual function using the International Index of Erectile Functions (IIEF) and female sexual function using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI).

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in female sexual satisfaction were noted between groups.
  • In males, erectile function showed insignificant negative correlations with tinnitus loudness and depression scores, but a positive correlation with tinnitus duration.
  • Female sexual function exhibited an insignificant negative correlation with tinnitus loudness and a positive correlation with tinnitus duration and depression scores.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual disturbance related to subjective tinnitus is more pronounced in the early stages and with lower tinnitus levels.
  • Individuals tend to adapt to tinnitus over time, with no significant loss in sexual performance observed in the long term.
  • Further research is warranted to explore sexual disturbances in patients with severe tinnitus loudness scores (STLL-Scs).
