[Apnoeic attacks as an isolated manifestation of epileptic seizures in infants]
Insights
Apnoea is a rare seizure symptom in infants. This study documented seizures presenting solely as apnoea in two infants using EEG, with one showing normal development at follow-up.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Neonatal Seizure Disorders
- Infant Neurodevelopment
Background:
- Seizures in neonates can manifest as apnoea.
- Apnoeic seizures are less common in infants compared to neonates.
Observation:
- Two infant cases are presented where apnoea was the sole seizure manifestation.
- Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings confirmed seizures during apnoeic events.
Findings:
- Apnoea as an isolated seizure symptom in infants is rare but documented.
- One infant demonstrated normal neurological status and psychomotor development at 3-year follow-up.
Implications:
- Highlights the importance of EEG in diagnosing subtle seizure presentations in infants.
- Suggests that isolated apnoeic seizures may not always lead to long-term neurodevelopmental deficits.
Abstract:
Apnoea as anisolated manidestation of seizures is well described in neonates but is only occasionally observed in infants. We present data from two infants, with apnoea as the sole manifestation of seizures documented by EEG recording. At 3 years follow up, normal neurological status and psychomotor development were seen in 1 infant.
