Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the construct validity of two single-response physical activity self-report items.
  • To determine if these items align with established measures of physical activity and health markers.

Main Methods:

  • 687 participants completed either an 8-response (PA8) or 5-response (PA5) physical activity questionnaire.
  • Maximal cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and health markers were assessed clinically.
  • Statistical analyses included partial correlation, MANCOVA, and logistic regression, controlling for age and gender.

Main Results:

  • Both PA8 and PA5 demonstrated significant correlations with CRF (PA8 = .53, PA5 = .57).
  • Participants reporting sufficient physical activity showed lower body fat percentage and cholesterol levels.
  • Self-reported physical activity aligned with objective CRF and health markers.

Conclusions:

  • The single-response physical activity items possess evidence of construct validity.
  • These validated tools offer a feasible, cost-effective, and efficient approach for large-scale physical activity assessment.
